Towards Robust Long-Lived Agents: Benchmarking Experience Lifecycles in Evolving Environments

arXiv:2611.05450v1 Announce Type: new Abstract: As agents become more capable, they are moving beyond one-off tasks toward sustained assistance across successive user goals. Such assistance requires agents to discover how unfamiliar environments work, reuse what they learn across tasks, and keep that experience current as environments evolve. Existing benchmarks increasingly study experience reuse and adaptation, but provide limited insight into which parts of accumulated experience agents revise, retain, or lose. To address this gap, we introduce ReScopeBench, a benchmark for the experience lifecycle across 18 interactive environments. It distinguishes structural experience about how an environment is organized and accessed from rule experience about reusable principles and constraints that guide decisions across tasks. To study how experience is acquired, reused, and revised, we propose an experience-first construction approach. It builds task streams around shared experience and introduces silent environmental changes. We evaluate task performance and track changes in saved experience throughout each stream. Across 20 models, we find that retained experience improves task performance, but agents struggle to keep it current as environments change. Even when the required experience is correctly recorded, agents do not always complete tasks successfully. These findings identify selective maintenance and effective use as complementary challenges for long-lived agents.

Uncertainty-Aware Resource Orchestration for Agentic AI Systems

arXiv:2611.05392v1 Announce Type: new Abstract: Agentic artificial intelligence (AI) systems powered by large language models (LLMs) execute as autonomous multi-step pipelines that dynamically invoke tools, integrate observations into memory, and iterate until a task is resolved or a resource budget is exhausted. Unlike classical workflows with fixed graphs, the aggregate compute, bandwidth, and end-to-end latency demands of such pipelines are unknown at dispatch time: they emerge at runtime from intermediate observations and stochastic token sampling, yielding heavy-tailed, multi-modal random variables. This unpredictability forces infrastructure orchestrators into a dilemma: under-provisioning risks mid-execution throttling and deadline violations, while over-provisioning wastes scarce edge or cloud capacity. Existing schedulers require a fully known pipeline graph, while edge resource-management methods rely on parametric or stationary demand models, and neither fits the unknown, non-stationary profiles of agentic pipelines. We formalize this setting as the uncertainty-aware agentic orchestration problem, where the goal is to reserve, at dispatch time, compute and bandwidth allocations that cover actual pipeline demands, and to verify that the pipeline can meet its deadline, each with a prescribed probability. We then propose Conformal Reservation for Orchestration (CRO), an online algorithm that translates a sliding window of past execution traces into dispatch-time resource allocations with finite-sample, distribution-free coverage guarantees via conformal prediction. Simulations over heterogeneous task mixes with multi-modal and heavy-tailed profiles show that CRO is the only evaluated method that simultaneously satisfies target probabilistic coverage across all risk levels while, among coverage-feasible methods, attaining the lowest over-reservation, roughly halving the resource waste of the Chebyshev-bound baseline.

VirtualTrialHarness: Coordinating Agentic Operationalization of Virtual Trial Protocols Across Complex Clinical Schemas

arXiv:2611.05551v1 Announce Type: new Abstract: Virtual trials use routinely collected clinical data to evaluate treatment strategies, but translating a study protocol into an executable analysis requires determining how clinical concepts and study requirements should be represented in the available data and applied consistently across the workflow. These decisions depend on local data representations and operational conventions and can involve source selection, patient and encounter identity, linkage, and temporal interpretation. Here we introduce VirtualTrialHarness (VTHarness), an agent framework that coordinates virtual-trial operationalization by selecting reusable procedural skills for each workflow stage and uses explicit contracts to maintain consistent study decisions across stages. We also introduce VTBenchmark for evaluating source selection and cohort construction. Across three complex synthetic environments, VTHarness successfully produced all required cohort outputs matching the references in 95.1% of workflows after requirement clarification, compared with 60.4% using retrieval from the same procedural corpus. Procedural skills improved source recovery across three language models and increased source overlap with analyst code in 13 Mayo Clinic cases. Site-specific adaptation enabled reference-matched cohort execution across eight MIMIC-IV tasks. Within the Mayo Clinic Virtual Trials Program, the framework supported investigator review of cohort construction and endpoint analysis. These findings support coordinating procedural guidance with workflow decisions to improve virtual-trial implementation across complex clinical schemas.

When Latent Dynamics Meet Data Assimilation: A Benchmark of Koopman-Type Representations

arXiv:2611.03916v1 Announce Type: new Abstract: Koopman representations describe nonlinear dynamics through linear evolution in a transformed space, offering an attractive framework for their linear simplicity and generality. Yet these advantages do not necessarily translate into improved performance in deep latent data assimilation (LDA). We systematically compare seven representative methods and structural baselines across five systems spanning approximately periodic to strongly chaotic dynamics and a broad range of state dimensions. We evaluate forecast and assimilation accuracy, physical state recovery, latent-trajectory behavior, and dynamical consistency, and assess Gaussian error assumptions, objective convexity, and uniqueness of analysis solutions. Our results reveal a trade-off between representational flexibility and optimization tractability. Linear evolution of the latent state can stabilize short-term forecasts but restrict expressiveness in strongly chaotic and high-dimensional systems, without consistently improving assimilation accuracy. Parameterized linear operators offer greater flexibility, yet their joint optimization with the encoder--decoder remains nonconvex. Methods with closed-form analysis updates generally perform better and exhibit greater robustness in our experiments, although matrix inversion remains a computational bottleneck. These findings show that the practical benefits of Koopman structure depend on both sufficient observational information and the choice of assimilation procedure.

A Conditional Mutual Information Analysis of Response Variety in Language Models

arXiv:2611.03836v1 Announce Type: new Abstract: Large language models provide a variety of responses at inference (generation) that conventionally depend on a temperature parameter. Using a conditional mutual information approach, a quantitative, entropy based analysis of response variety is given. Three limiting behaviors are defined: arbiter, independent (conditionally) and neutral (deterministic) that span no to maximal mutual information. We give examples of each behavior and suggest their application to: temperature analysis, language analysis, prompt compression, and knowledge graphs.

CaRe-KT: Continuity-Aware Retrieval-Augmented Reasoning for Knowledge Tracing

arXiv:2611.03744v1 Announce Type: new Abstract: Knowledge tracing (KT) estimates learners' evolving knowledge states from interaction histories to support adaptive learning. Retrieval-augmented KT improves these estimates using cross-learner behavioral evidence, but existing approaches typically separate evidence retrieval from downstream prediction. This creates a retrieval-inference alignment gap because evidence relevance varies with the learner's evolving state and prediction context. We propose CaRe-KT, a query-adaptive framework that maintains relevance continuity between evidence acquisition and inference without equating retrieval relevance with predictive utility. CaRe-KT introduces an Evidence-Graph Cache (EGC) that combines persistent question-level relational compatibility with interaction-level temporal validity to construct query-specific evidence subgraphs. Historical learning trajectories retrieved through these subgraphs are encoded alongside the target learner's history in a shared representation space using outcome-supervised contrastive learning. An attention mechanism combines acquisition relevance with learned query-evidence compatibility, allowing relevance to inform, rather than determine, each trajectory's predictive influence. Experiments across five benchmarks show that CaRe-KT outperforms strong KT baselines and remains robust under sparse-history and cold-start conditions. These findings support relevance continuity as a design principle for retrieval-augmented knowledge tracing.

CHROMA-MILL: Joint Low-Light Enhancement and White Balance under Colored Illumination

arXiv:2611.04092v1 Announce Type: new Abstract: Capturing an image in a low-light environment produces a weak, noisy sensor signal. Low-light image enhancement (LLIE) aims to restore it. Auto white balance (AWB) is also required for every image, and the same noisy signal degrades its ability to infer the scene illuminant. LLIE is typically performed first, followed by AWB, but this strategy remains largely unexamined because existing low-light datasets span a narrow range of illuminants and lack illuminant ground truth for evaluating AWB. We address this with CHROMA-MILL, a RAW dataset of 50 scenes captured with a DSLR and smartphone under four calibrated illuminants at eleven intensity levels. Because light is additive, we blend these captures in the linear RAW domain to synthesize physically valid illuminant mixtures with exact chromaticity ground truth. Benchmarking on this data, we find joint correction is best, and introduce CTI-Retinexformer, which supervises an illumination map, a chromaticity prediction, and an illumination-invariant scene embedding, outperforming the best cascade by 0.7 dB PSNR$_L$ and 1.1 $\Delta E_{00}$.

Co-Occurrence Priors Override Visual Spatial Evidence: Understanding False Alarms in Vision-Language Models for Construction Struck-By Hazard Detection

arXiv:2611.04112v1 Announce Type: new Abstract: Vision-language models (VLMs) increasingly support construction hazard monitoring, yet their frequent false alarms remain poorly understood. This study investigates whether false struck-by hazard warnings arise from failures in object recognition, spatial relation encoding, or hazard decisions dominated by learned co-occurrence priors. We evaluated Qwen2.5-VL-7B and InternVL3.5-8B using 355 counterfactual worker-excavator scene pairs with controlled spatial proximity and worker-removal variants, combining behavioral analysis, internal representation probing, causal interventions, and decision correction. Both models recognized the entities and encoded their spatial relations (out-of-fold AUROC: 0.82 and 0.91), assigning higher hazard scores to near than far scenes in 79% and 73% of pairs. Nevertheless, 74% and 100% of far scenes were falsely classified as hazardous. Removing the worker reduced Qwen's hazard rate to 11%, while worker presence exerted 2.4- and 3.2-times greater influence on hazard scores than spatial proximity in the respective models. Attention-head interventions, neuron-level interventions, and activation steering failed to eliminate this co-occurrence bias. However, conditioning hazard decisions on the model's own spatial-relation representation improved Qwen's specificity from 0.36 to 0.58 at matched sensitivity, outperforming threshold recalibration. These findings reveal that VLM struck-by false alarms stem primarily from decision-making failures rather than deficiencies in object recognition or spatial encoding, suggesting that future efforts should prioritize conditioning hazard decisions on encoded spatial evidence rather than further improving visual recognition alone.
