The AI boom’s missing balance-sheet question: What has actually been verified?

Artificial intelligence infrastructure commitments are growing faster than the evidence connecting contracted capacity to sustained economic value. I spent 13 years on the floor of the New York Stock Exchange. One lesson stayed with me long after the trading jackets disappeared: A transaction could be executed, documented and perfectly valid while the assumptions that made […] The post The AI boom’s missing balance-sheet question: What has actually been verified? appeared first on SiliconANGLE.

Show HN: Overhead – the planes overhead, painted on an e-ink frame

Hi HN,I've been fascinated by aviation for some time now. Inspired by Fugleramme, I wanted a framed print of a cluster of aircraft over my house or a busy airport. So I built Overhead. (Photos in the README)The hero photo shows planes departing and landing in Changi, Singapore. How it worksFlight data for a location is gathered from adsb.lol and adsb.fi as a fallback. (you can also point it to your own ADS-B receiver). The photo of the exact aircraft is gathered from planespotters.net and the photographer is credited on the page. The photo is then handed to an AI image gen service via fal.ai using your own key. It's then cut out and packed into a cluster on the page with packers adapted from Fugleramme. It costs about US$0.04 a painting but images are painted once and kept for the next time that aircraft is seen. You can also choose to only show photos. This widget is built on my open source, self-hosted e-ink platform, Tesserae. It's a one click install from the widget catalog.I'm looking for feedback and contributors.https://github.com/arnegiacomo/fugleramme https://github.com/dmellok/tesserae Comments URL: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=50390605 Points: 1 # Comments: 0

Show HN: Phone Link for macOS – Use Your Android Phone on macOS

English isn’t my first language, sorry for grammar mistakes.I usually use Windows and Android, and these two platforms can be linked via Microsoft's "Link to Windows", or "Phone Link" program. So, you can easily use some features such as notifications, messages, screen mirroring, and clipboard synchronization on Windows from your Android phone.Recently, I changed my personal computer to macOS from Windows, and it made me need a similar program. I developed this program to run on macOS while still using the "Link to Windows" app on Android phone. It supports most features of the Windows client (notifications, messages, photos, mirroring, file transfer, etc.), except calling. The license is MIT. This project is an unofficial client unrelated to Microsoft and has no affiliation with them. Comments URL: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=50389540 Points: 1 # Comments: 0

Show HN: Repairer – close the breach when a Linux flaw goes public

As we've seen with the Ubuntu critical CVE-2026-98432 (CVSS 9.8), AI-dicovered zero day exploit are being reported at an exponential rate and we don't have the process for dealing with the flood of exploits in real time. What we need is an AI-based system for autopatching systems based on real time information. The vendor's fix can take days or weeks to be out (is the Ubuntu thing patched yet?) and meanwhile the grid is vulnerable to exploitation, especially AI worms.Repairer is a small program that runs on each of your servers. The day an exploit goes public it puts up a stopgap that blocks it, and once the real fix is up it takes the stopgap back off by itself.A stopgap only takes something away — drop certain packets, turn off a kernel module or service, remove a setuid bit. It never opens a port, installs or downloads anything, nor runs code. It arms an undo playbook before applying the stopgap, so the change reverts if affects any services. It only ever acts on rules you sign with a (hardware) crypto wallet.Let's go further: stopgaps are written and checked by a swarm of AI agents (gnosh.ai sessions) running on gno.land, each with bonded stake. Each stopgap is run on fresh machines, and whoever is caught lying loses their stake to whoever caught them. The agent is built and tested on Ubuntu and Debian, all open source, standard-library Go. More distros coming. Let's build repairer together.https://gno.security/repairer/ https://github.com/gnosecurity/repairer Comments URL: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=50388417 Points: 1 # Comments: 1

Synthesizing symbolic models of human and machine reasoning at scale

arXiv:2611.07088v1 Announce Type: new Abstract: Symbolic models offer a powerful account of cognition, but their scope has historically been limited by the need for hand-engineering and computational tractability. We show how advances in artificial intelligence (AI) can scale symbolic modeling and help overcome these engineering limitations. We introduce Behavior-Conditioned Symbolic Synthesis (BCSS)---an approach for automated search of interpretable, deterministic symbolic programs that verifiably reproduce behavior---and apply it to model both human and machine behavior across hundreds of challenging reasoning problems. Analyzing these programs reveals that both people and machines tend to oversimplify, adopt rules that are partial explanations for their observations, and misinfer dependencies between problem features. These shared signatures are modulated by available resources, with reasoning effort predicting the extent to which machines simplify and explain their observations. Together, these results point to underlying mechanisms reminiscent of satisficing in both people and machines, and illustrate how BCSS offers a general approach for interpreting and comparing rule-based reasoning of humans and black-box AI systems.

The Two-Ledger Model: Transaction-Grain Cost Accounting for Multi-Agent AI Systems Across Clouds, Models, and Systems of Record

arXiv:2611.06989v1 Announce Type: new Abstract: Enterprises run business transactions through multi-agent AI systems spanning clouds, large language models (LLMs), orchestration harnesses, and systems of record. Finance receives AI cost only at settlement grain, aggregated by SKU and charge period. The business question (what did this order, claim, or case cost in AI?) cannot be answered from billing data, because providers never see enterprise transaction boundaries. The FinOps Open Cost and Usage Specification (FOCUS) gives billing data one schema across providers but remains settlement-grain even as it adds AI token and requester attribution. We formalize this grain mismatch, derive seven requirements, and propose the Two-Ledger Model: a settlement ledger of FOCUS-conformant billing data joined to an attribution ledger of invocation-grain usage records built on OpenTelemetry GenAI telemetry. A layered correlation spine (trace context, A2A/MCP metadata, business-key correlation, probabilistic matching) assigns each record to its business transaction with recorded method and confidence; a versioned rate card prices usage in near real time; period reconciliation ties both ledgers to the invoice, and the unexplained residual identifies shadow AI. Costs are reported per order, claim, or outcome with agentic cost metrics. A simulation with known ground truth shows the spine sustaining cost coverage above 99% as trace propagation falls to zero, the reconciliation residual recovering planted unmetered spend within 0.24 percentage points while flagging provider billing errors, and mid-flight gating cutting p99 transaction cost by up to 61% at a 2-4% false-pause rate. We propose the attribution ledger as an invocation-grain FOCUS profile for standardization.

Trust Responsive Runtime Authorization for Agentic AI with Empirical Characterization of Policy Behavior and Parameter Sensitivity

arXiv:2611.06996v1 Announce Type: new Abstract: The policy that converts runtime estimates of an autonomous agent's condition into operational authority is rarely specified or measured. We empirically characterize the Trust Responsive Authorization Policy (TRAP), which maps an Authorization Readiness Score (ARS), a weighted combination of runtime trust, operational stability, and contextual risk, onto discrete authorization levels through an asymmetric rule: escalation requires consecutive observations above a band edge plus a margin, while a sharp drop in readiness restricts authority at once. On one matched set of 100 Monte Carlo traces, we compare TRAP with static, trust-only, risk-only, and symmetric policies. Under abrupt degradation, TRAP restricts at onset and re-escalates sooner after recovery than the symmetric policy, with the highest and, descriptively, least variable stability among the adaptive policies, although more of its post-recovery escalations occur below the selected trust threshold. Paired bootstrap intervals exclude zero for the remaining differences. In one-factor sweeps, recovery time rises with the escalation margin and run length, shifts with the score weights, and is unchanged by the restriction threshold. In an exploratory post-freeze experiment, when the same degradation is spread over 5-20 intervals, TRAP restricts only on the 4 traces that retain a single-interval drop above that threshold; averaged over all 100 traces, it holds authority above what readiness supports for 15.9-18.9 of the 20 degradation intervals, against 0.8 under abrupt degradation and about 10 for the symmetric policy. Its restriction advantage therefore depends on degradation being abrupt. All reported values are traceable to the publicly available, versioned research release.

Uncertainty calibration in Bayesian M/EEG source imaging

arXiv:2611.06979v1 Announce Type: new Abstract: M/EEG source imaging requires accurate localization and reliable uncertainty estimates, yet posterior credible regions are rarely assessed for empirical calibration. We present a simulation-based framework for uncertainty quantification and calibration of empirical Bayesian inverse methods with closed-form conditional Gaussian posterior summaries. We compare Bayesian minimum norm (BMN) with sLORETA depth weighting and sparse Bayesian learning (SBL) with sparse basis field expansions (S-FLEX). S-FLEX allows retained coefficients to contribute nonzero marginal posterior variance at locations where voxel-wise SBL yields degenerate variances. For BMN, we derive joint source- and noise-variance updates through evidence maximization. We test whether adaptive noise learning yields near-calibrated uncertainties. Both methods retain residual miscalibration, motivating post-hoc isotonic recalibration of credible-region levels using empirical coverage. Simulations assess fixed- and free-orientation models across signal-to-noise ratios (SNR), source sparsity levels, and subject-specific head models, using oracle, baseline-estimated, and adaptively learned noise. Before recalibration, SBL+S-FLEX yields lower Wasserstein localization error, smaller posterior uncertainty, and coverage closer to nominal credibility than BMN+sLORETA. Isotonic recalibration improves both methods, with larger gains for conservative BMN+sLORETA posteriors; transfer across mismatched SNR, sparsity, and head models remains condition dependent. Noise specifications yield broadly consistent reconstruction and uncertainty trends within each estimator. In real auditory MEG data, SBL+S-FLEX provides more focal localization and tighter uncertainties than BMN+sLORETA, suggesting greater statistical power for identifying bilateral auditory sources.

WeLM-Image: A Unified Image Generation Model towards Visual Intelligence

arXiv:2611.07392v1 Announce Type: new Abstract: We present \textbf{WeLM-Image}, a unified image foundation model that integrates multimodal understanding into text-to-image generation, instruction-guided editing, and multi-reference synthesis. Designed for single-GPU deployment in WeChat's large-scale consumer applications, the model processes text, reference images, and target latents as one interleaved sequence. A Mixture-of-Transformers (MoT) backbone combines shared attention with independent understanding and generation parameters to limit optimization interference. Equipping each path with Mixture-of-Experts (MoE) modules provides sparse capacity, with 31.7B stored parameters and approximately 5.4B generation parameters activated per target latent token. A generation-oriented data engine combines a knowledge-grounded visual vocabulary with large-scale visual clustering to balance semantic coverage and editing tasks, while training-time evaluation guides iterative data refinement. Bilingual annotations and verified editing supervision support progressive training up to native 1.5K resolution. We optimize generation and editing separately with rubric- and checklist-based rewards, then consolidate the specialized policies through noise-aware on-policy distillation. In the reported overall comparisons, the 1536-resolution model ranks first among the evaluated open-source models on PRISM-Bench, Qwen-Image-Bench, and UnicBench. MeanFlow-based few-step distillation yields WeLM-Image-Turbo, which generates a $1024\times1024$ image in 4.98\,s on a single NVIDIA H20 GPU using eight guidance-free steps.

When Every Choice Is Correct: A Causal Study of Numerical Preference in Language Models

arXiv:2611.06025v1 Announce Type: new Abstract: When a language model chooses a number between 1 and 30, every integer in the range is valid, yet the model can favor particular answers. We use numerical choice to study how preference is processed across layers and tokens. Perturbation probing and gradient attribution nominate neurons for activation interventions. In a selected Qwen3-4B case, a pre-answer edit changes 17 to 15 while both runs first emit 1. After the edit ends, selective cache and attention-output replacements trace part of its continuing influence on the second digit. Replacing one attention head's output or the other heads' outputs jointly produces similar immediate readout contributions; both interventions restore 17 but have different final log-odds effects on 7 versus 5. Holding later multilayer perceptron (MLP) outputs at their values from the edited run without either replacement reduces this effect gap from 0.119 to 0.0025 nat. Later computation therefore changes how similar local contributions affect the continuation. Retrospective estimates across eighteen contexts capture much of the probability movement but miss the selected answer switch. Prompt tests also separate influence from answer changes: one held-out prompt retains influence without switching, and only one of twelve fresh wordings qualifies for the reader/MLP test; there, joint MLP clamping again reduces the gap between the two reader effects while the answer remains 17. These results use numerical choice as a controlled case for studying persistent state and conditional downstream processing; they do not establish the origin or a complete circuit of natural numerical preference.

Where Should a KV-Cache Repair Budget Go? Distractor Structure and Contextual Compatibility in Non-Prefix Reuse

arXiv:2611.06397v1 Announce Type: new Abstract: Non-prefix KV-cache reuse encodes retrieved chunks independently and concatenates their caches. To find where a small repair budget should be spent, we vary the chunks around the answer-bearing one (the target) across three 7B-8B models and four datasets of dialogue memory, open-domain QA and API documentation. Reuse loses 19-100% of the context-dependent questions that full prefill answers, and it loses more when the other chunks are of the same kind as the target. Because the recoverable damage is spread over these other chunks, restoring a few of them recovers little, and the budget is better spent on the target. This works through contextual compatibility: recomputing the target against the reused cache beats inserting its full-prefill KV in all seven settings tested, although the recomputed KV stays far from the full-prefill KV. Question attention over reused caches, however, selects the target in at most 18.8% of development questions. A retriever finds it more often, and recomputing its top chunk after moving it next to the question significantly beats InfoFlow-style reordering at the same 5% budget in six of nine open-domain QA and API-documentation settings. On dialogue memory, though, recomputing chunks never significantly beats the token-level selector chosen for each setting.
