Here is Cerea, a self-hostable, open-source (Apache 2.0) chat+agent frontend for LLMs. It works alone with any OpenAI-compatible inference provider, but it's way better when coupled with the model gateway I'm also developing, Pystino (https://github.com/paoloviviani/Pystino).I came to this after struggling to find a hosted chat interface that was truly open source, that I really enjoyed to use, and that was simple enough to be shared and used by family. In particular, I was looking for something that could provide the smooth and integrated user experience of commercial products for the tasks needed by family (e.g., document editing, form filling, notes and knowledge management), but backed by open models hosted wherever I decide. Then it became richer, now supporting: remote coding agents (wrapping Opencode), delegation and coordination between agents, integration between chat/projects and code agents (this one to me is a pain point for Claude, which I use at work), projects, RAG, rich artifacts support, schedules, and more. You can try it yourself, either cloning the full repo and head to Cerea/kit, or just the deploy kit with a script (https://github.com/paoloviviani/Cerea#quick-start).It's just a docker compose with a ./configure script that helps to generate a sensible .env for the specific scenario. It works in the browser and as a PWA on mobile.I hope you'll enjoy, feel free to reach out for questions. Comments URL: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=50384502 Points: 1 # Comments: 0

arXiv:2611.05386v1 Announce Type: new Abstract: Small Language Models (SLMs) are increasingly deployed on consumer-grade hardware, yet their ability to preserve information across progressively longer contexts remains insufficiently understood. Existing benchmarks primarily evaluate retrieval-oriented tasks, providing limited insight into whether successful retrieval reflects comprehensive long-context memory preservation. To address this limitation, this paper introduces Simple Retrieval-Reconstruction Memory (SRRM), a lightweight and fully reproducible benchmark that jointly evaluates Targeted Retrieval and Global Information Reconstruction. This study also proposes the Memory Preservation Ratio (MPR), a benchmark-level metric that quantifies the relationship between retrieval and reconstruction performance. SRRM was evaluated using a synthetic dataset on three Qwen2.5 models (0.5B, 1.5B, and 3B parameters) across context loads ranging from 10 to 100 factual statements. Experimental results show that reconstruction performance deteriorated substantially faster than retrieval accuracy as contextual information increased, indicating that retrieval alone is insufficient to characterize long-context memory preservation. Among the evaluated models, Qwen2.5-1.5B achieved the highest retrieval accuracy (86.7%), reconstruction performance (45.7%), and MPR (0.53), outperforming the larger Qwen2.5-3B model (72.2%, 18.5%, and 0.26, respectively). These findings demonstrate that increasing parameter count does not necessarily improve long-context memory preservation. Overall, SRRM provides a reproducible and extensible benchmark for systematically evaluating long-context memory while revealing complementary memory behaviors that remain hidden under retrieval-only evaluation frameworks.
arXiv:2611.03966v1 Announce Type: new Abstract: Large Language Bayes (LLB) transforms a natural language problem description into a collection of candidate probabilistic programs and performs inference within each model, combining their predictions using Bayesian model averaging. While this provides a flexible framework for probabilistic inference without manual model specification, the resulting candidate model set is often misspecified in practice, and likelihood-based aggregation can concentrate on a single model, under-representing uncertainty across the sampled models. We propose a stacking-based aggregation method for LLB that selects model weights by optimizing predictive performance rather than marginal likelihood, while preserving the original language-model-driven model generation and within-model inference pipeline. Because leave-one-out predictive quantities are intractable in latent-variable models, we derive a variational lower bound that yields a tractable ELBO-based stacking objective. Across real-world probabilistic inference tasks, our method achieves comparable predictive performance to Bayesian model averaging while yielding more dispersed model weights, reducing concentration on a single candidate model under misspecification.
Chris Alexiuk has a simple rule about open source AI: If you believe in it, be loud about it. “We should be shouting about this technology from the rooftops,” said Alexiuk, a Toronto-based senior product research engineer in deep learning at NVIDIA who specializes in making open large language models (LLMs) practical for working developers. arXiv:2611.05542v1 Announce Type: new Abstract: Whole-page ranking jointly optimizes advertisements and organic content to balance business outcomes and user engagement under complex layout and business constraints. Existing non-autoregressive (NAR) approaches enable efficient page generation but typically score candidate items independently of previously selected items, limiting their ability to capture order-dependent interactions. Autoregressive (AR) methods address this limitation through sequential conditioning, but incur substantial inference overhead that challenges large-scale deployment. Bridging this quality-efficiency gap remains a challenge in industrial whole-page ranking. We propose Multi-Item Scoring (MIS), a prefix-aware NAR-style framework that incorporates sequential context into efficient multi-item scoring. MIS integrates global candidate interactions, localized prefix conditioning, and position-aware scoring within a shared representation architecture. By computing reusable representations once per request and performing lightweight prefix-conditioned scoring during constrained beam search, MIS captures important sequential dependencies without repeated full-model inference. Experiments on KuaiRand-1K and RL4RS demonstrate that MIS approaches the generation quality of an autoregressive CGA baseline while achieving 4.07x and 3.54x faster CPU decoding, respectively. In a randomized evaluation on a large-scale social-video platform, MIS improves the realization metric by 0.104% and watch time by 0.058%, while reducing ranking-service CPU consumption by 9.73%. These results demonstrate that prefix-aware multi-item scoring can narrow the quality gap between NAR and AR generation while retaining the efficiency required for industrial scalability.
arXiv:2611.05450v1 Announce Type: new Abstract: As agents become more capable, they are moving beyond one-off tasks toward sustained assistance across successive user goals. Such assistance requires agents to discover how unfamiliar environments work, reuse what they learn across tasks, and keep that experience current as environments evolve. Existing benchmarks increasingly study experience reuse and adaptation, but provide limited insight into which parts of accumulated experience agents revise, retain, or lose. To address this gap, we introduce ReScopeBench, a benchmark for the experience lifecycle across 18 interactive environments. It distinguishes structural experience about how an environment is organized and accessed from rule experience about reusable principles and constraints that guide decisions across tasks. To study how experience is acquired, reused, and revised, we propose an experience-first construction approach. It builds task streams around shared experience and introduces silent environmental changes. We evaluate task performance and track changes in saved experience throughout each stream. Across 20 models, we find that retained experience improves task performance, but agents struggle to keep it current as environments change. Even when the required experience is correctly recorded, agents do not always complete tasks successfully. These findings identify selective maintenance and effective use as complementary challenges for long-lived agents.

arXiv:2611.05551v1 Announce Type: new Abstract: Virtual trials use routinely collected clinical data to evaluate treatment strategies, but translating a study protocol into an executable analysis requires determining how clinical concepts and study requirements should be represented in the available data and applied consistently across the workflow. These decisions depend on local data representations and operational conventions and can involve source selection, patient and encounter identity, linkage, and temporal interpretation. Here we introduce VirtualTrialHarness (VTHarness), an agent framework that coordinates virtual-trial operationalization by selecting reusable procedural skills for each workflow stage and uses explicit contracts to maintain consistent study decisions across stages. We also introduce VTBenchmark for evaluating source selection and cohort construction. Across three complex synthetic environments, VTHarness successfully produced all required cohort outputs matching the references in 95.1% of workflows after requirement clarification, compared with 60.4% using retrieval from the same procedural corpus. Procedural skills improved source recovery across three language models and increased source overlap with analyst code in 13 Mayo Clinic cases. Site-specific adaptation enabled reference-matched cohort execution across eight MIMIC-IV tasks. Within the Mayo Clinic Virtual Trials Program, the framework supported investigator review of cohort construction and endpoint analysis. These findings support coordinating procedural guidance with workflow decisions to improve virtual-trial implementation across complex clinical schemas.
Phonon, a small text-to-speech model that runs entirely on the user's device without requiring internet access, has been released with support for English, French, German, Spanish, and Portuguese. Built on the Pocket TTS lineage using flow matching, Phonon achieves high-quality audio in compact sizes (65 MB and 75 MB), with the 31m version licensed under Apache 2.0 for commercial use. It excels in intelligibility and speed, ranking first in German and Spanish on Hugging Face's Open TTS Leaderboard and leading in CPU streaming benchmarks. The model supports voice cloning, custom voices via Gradium Studio, and integrates with Hugging Face Transformers. It is available in multiple formats and backends, including WebAssembly, GPU, and NPU, enabling deployment across phones, laptops, single-board computers, and browsers. Over 200,000 downloads were recorded in its first two weeks, with active developer adoption through tools like ExecuTorch, Micdrop, and Spaces. Future developments include support for additional languages, smaller models, and custom vocabulary fine-tuning.
arXiv:2611.05991v1 Announce Type: new Abstract: Multi-agent LLM applications repeat most of their prompt tokens across requests, and serving engines reuse the cached state of shared prefixes. vLLM and SGLang reuse it at different granularities, and benchmarks of their default deployments report large performance gaps, usually credited to the cache. Such comparisons rarely control for other configuration differences. One of them, whether a long prompt is prefilled in chunks, is set by each engine's defaults from the hardware and the release, and it confounds the comparison. We built a reproducible testbed on Kubernetes and a seeded multi-agent workload generator, and compared the two engines under vendor defaults and with chunked prefill matched. SGLang's configuration is the same in both arms, which makes it an internal control across independently provisioned deployments. Under defaults, vLLM's median time to first token is up to 64x SGLang's. Matching one setting removes 78% of the capacity gap where that gap is largest and 30 to 67% of the latency gap. Near saturation the remaining latency gap reflects queue growth. A fluid queue model driven only by a 4.4% throughput shortfall reproduces it, and shows that such a gap scales with the length of the benchmark run. What survives matching is a tail-latency advantage of 2.4 to 6.4x at equal throughput, consistent with cache-aware ordering of waiting requests. We derive six recommendations for comparing serving engines.
arXiv:2611.05394v1 Announce Type: new Abstract: Tiered inference distributes large language model computation across a hierarchy of devices, from on-device and edge hardware to the datacenter, and is increasingly offered as the route to cheaper, lower-latency, and more private serving. Most such systems orchestrate frozen model checkpoints, and most decide what to resolve locally and what to escalate using a confidence signal produced by a forward-deployed model. We give a closed-form condition for when no threshold on that signal makes a tiered cascade worthwhile relative to sending every query to the backstop. Modeling the routing decision as a binary test and separating local from escalation cost through an architecture cost ratio $\kappa$, we derive a feasibility condition bracketed by a signal-free floor, below which a cascade is feasible at any signal quality, and a perfect-signal ceiling, above which none is. Read along the $\kappa$ axis the condition inverts: where local compute is billed, cost binds, matching a recent empirical finding; where it is sunk, on decentralized hardware, feasibility becomes unconditional and signal quality instead sets what the cascade achieves. We turn the condition into three design requirements that existing trained-in primitives satisfy only in isolation, and we propose, as future work, a co-designed architecture and a protocol to test it. The condition and the inversion hold independently of that architecture; they are the paper's contribution.
