Show HN: Alternative to Nvidia Auto-Ontology

This repo provides an alternative to the ontology compiling capabilities of NVIDA Auto-Ontology.The main difference is that it builds the ontology from most of your existing data assets (transformation code, dashboards, docs), instead of building it from your warehouse and semantic layer only.It consists in skills and python scripts that ingest the metadata and docs your team already has, and compile them into YAML and Markdown files structured in a file tree that an agent can use as context to query your data. When your existing asset contradict, or reveal a gap in the business context around your data, it writes down questions for you and your team instead of guessing a plausible meaning. It runs locally in any coding agent. SSPE: Robust Sequential Staypoint Extraction in Degraded Trajectory Data

arXiv:2611.03737v1 Announce Type: new Abstract: Extracting semantically meaningful staypoints from raw trajectory streams is a foundational prerequisite for mobility analytics. However, real-world trajectory data is frequently degraded by severe spatial noise and protracted temporal dropouts. Classic threshold-based extraction methods, such as the widely adopted sliding-window algorithm, are highly sensitive to these anomalies, routinely fracturing continuous stationary episodes into disjointed fragments. To overcome this limitation, we propose the Sequential Staypoint Extraction (SSPE) algorithm. SSPE employs a resilient, state-driven architecture that replaces static spatial anchors with a dynamic centroid and introduces an $n$-step lookahead heuristic to structurally tolerate transient coordinate drift. Concurrently, it utilizes temporal bridging mechanisms to prevent artificial fragmentation during prolonged signal loss. Since optimal extraction parameters vary significantly across datasets, we further introduce a fully unsupervised, consensus-based parameter estimation framework. This framework derives baseline statistical scales directly from the raw trajectory data and identifies the optimal parameter configuration by maximizing structural agreement, thereby eliminating the reliance on annotated ground truth. We evaluate SSPE on the ExtraSensory dataset, a real-world mobility corpus with manually verified ground-truth staypoints, against the sliding-window implementation of Trackintel, one of the most widely adopted extraction baselines in the field. Empirical results demonstrate that SSPE achieves superior accuracy, yielding higher F1-scores while simultaneously improving computational efficiency over this standard.

Stress-Testing the Robustness of LLM-Based Causal Inference

arXiv:2611.03656v1 Announce Type: new Abstract: Why do some of the world's most powerful Artificial Intelligence (AI) systems still struggle to reason about cause and effect? Causal discovery, the ability to discern the underlying drivers of a system, is fundamental to scientific inquiry and has traditionally relied on structured data and statistical methods. Recently, Large Language Models (LLMs) have been explored as an alternative paradigm for causal inference, leveraging their broad knowledge and reasoning capabilities. Yet, despite their linguistic fluency, LLMs often rely on surface-level pattern recognition rather than genuine causal logic. While it is known that LLMs stumble in this domain, we lack a precise map of where, why, and how significantly these failures occur. In this paper, we propose a systematic stress-test framework across six critical dimensions: model scale, causal graph complexity, prompting strategy, metadata quality, data quality, and sensitivity to uncertainty. Our findings reveal a significant "optimism bias" in LLMs; models consistently overestimate causal links, leading to low precision across the board. Furthermore, we demonstrate that traditional evaluation metrics can be deceptive: while reasoning-heavy models lead in performance, the highest scores often occur when uncertainty in inference is overlooked. Once uncertainty is integrated into the evaluation, performance drops, providing a more honest reflection of causal reliability. We also find that, while scaling model size improves outcomes, these gains are fragile; performance degrades sharply as the quality of metadata decreases. This work serves as a practical guide to the blind spots of LLMs, offering a clear-eyed assessment of when these tools can be integrated into a causal discovery pipeline and when they are likely to lead researchers astray.

Swapping the Judge Changes the Ranking: A Preregistered Study of Cross-Provider Replication in LLM-Judged System Comparisons

arXiv:2611.04090v1 Announce Type: new Abstract: Practitioners who compare systems with an LLM judge and have no human labels often check a conclusion by repeating it with a judge from another provider. We test how far that check can be trusted. In a preregistered study (with a disclosed post-registration reduction of the judge set), five judge models from three providers re-judged 4,000 Chatbot Arena battles (nine systems, 33 system pairs) that carry human votes, each in both response orders. Agreement with the human vote was low at the verdict level (median Cohen's kappa = 0.22), and system rankings did not survive a change of judge: Kendall's tau with the human ranking ranged from 0.17 to 0.89 (median 0.67), so the preregistered hypothesis that rankings remain stable was not supported. Conclusions replicated by two low-cost judges from different providers matched the human conclusion more often than single-judge conclusions (+0.10 precision), but the gain came from filtering out one poorly aligned judge, and replication involving that judge left a conclusion for only 35% of comparisons. Judges that agreed with humans reached a stable conclusion with no more verdicts than human votes required; the others failed to converge on 26-70% of system pairs at the sample sizes tested (up to 100 verdicts per pair). Disagreements with the human vote co-occurred across judges far more often than independence predicts, although a single human vote per battle cannot separate shared judge bias from voter noise.

Towards Automatic Heart Murmur Characterization from Multi-spot Phonocardiograms

arXiv:2611.03654v1 Announce Type: new Abstract: Cardiac auscultation traditionally detects the presence of a heart murmur, but clinicians further characterize it by timing, shape, pitch, quality, and grade. Most automatic phonocardiogram analysis systems stop at binary detection and do not estimate this richer description. In this work, we formulate automatic murmur characterization as five patient-level classification tasks and compare three multi-spot strategies on recordings from the aortic, pulmonary, mitral, and tricuspid auscultation locations. First, classical and deep-learning classifiers are trained independently at each location, and predictions are combined via a maximum-severity late-fusion rule. Second, a synchronous multi-input CNN jointly processes one representative segment per location for a single task. Third, a unified multi-input, multi-output CNN predicts all five attributes from one shared multi-spot representation. Using 735 patients from the CirCor DigiScope dataset with complete four-spot recordings, the best late-fusion configurations reach an unweighted mean sensitivity between 85.56% and 93.81% across the five tasks, with class-specific recalls between 80.00% and 100.00% for every relevant category. The multi-input CNN trails late fusion by 7-16 points depending on the task, while the multi-output model reaches values between 72.59% and 79.40%, estimating all five attributes from one shared representation. We further show that naively balancing training data by adding all minority-class segments degrades patient-level performance under the maximum-severity rule, since it introduces non-representative, noisy segments not filtered by the clustering-based segment selection used for evaluation. These results indicate multi-spot murmur characterization is feasible with both fusion-based and jointly learned architectures, outlining a path toward automatic, structured murmur reports complementing binary screening.

We Ran a Research Sprint With AI. The AI Worked. The Research Didn't

arXiv:2611.03946v1 Announce Type: new Abstract: Generative AI tools for research are widely deployed, yet individual productivity gains do not guarantee better team research. We argue that how AI use is structured matters alongside access. Personal AI tools may amplify two failures under deadline pressure: a consumption bottleneck, in which generation outpaces team-visible evaluation, and AI-induced research silos, in which private human-AI loops displace shared decision-making. We motivate this position with a mechanism-generating pilot: a 100-minute research sprint with twelve researchers in three independently operating teams, within a seventeen-person session. Both patterns recurred across teams and evidence sources. Of 33 logged AI interactions, one was accepted outright and 27 lacked a recorded disposition; missing records alone do not establish absent evaluation. A parallel autonomous pipeline produced a complete draft without in-session human evaluation, illustrating production capacity rather than comparative quality. We propose Human-AI-Human collaboration: an interaction topology in which AI connects researchers' contexts and supports inspectable collective evaluation and decision-making. The pilot does not isolate AI-specific effects from time pressure or workflow practices. We close with seven modular, falsifiable design hypotheses, prioritizing shared context and team-visible evaluation checkpoints for controlled follow-up.

What Is This Memory Useful For? Measuring Task-Conditioned Utility in Long-Term Agent Memory

arXiv:2611.03930v1 Announce Type: new Abstract: A stored experience may answer one future question and offer little help with another. We measure this task-conditioned utility rather than assigning each memory a single importance score. A task-blind writer stores a memory without seeing the later task; a frozen reader then answers that task with and without the memory, using identical filler. A cost ledger records the resources used to form, store and expose the memory. On single-call factual-recall tasks built from LongMemEval-V2 web-agent memories, the same memory helps more when it contains information needed for the answer. Its mean paired reward gain on these answer-bearing task pairs exceeds that on matched-control pairs by $+0.33$ (95% interval $+0.21$ to $+0.46$). The tested task-blind summaries and structured records yield smaller gains than Raw, including at fixed total context; a budget sweep is consistent with retention of answer-bearing content contributing to the difference. The bearing--control contrast remains positive in a new session with randomized memory position and under a second reader, although individual memory--task labels change. Generic retrieval performs above chance but misses most screen-defined answer-bearing memories. The factual-recall gains do not extend to the tested software-engineering and scientific-coding benchmarks, where even raw memories have no measurable effect. We provide a public, versioned Conditional Memory Utility Dataset of paired measurements and costs. The practical takeaway is to evaluate memory compression by the task utility it preserves alongside its costs. Task-conditioned measurements make this comparison possible; their stability must also be checked.

When the Consumer Is an Agent: Execution-Grounded Service-Level Agreements

arXiv:2611.04182v1 Announce Type: new Abstract: Large language model (LLM) agents increasingly act as service consumers. They select operations and report whether a task is complete. In an asynchronous distributed service, an accepted call or immediate state read does not establish that the required state became observable by its deadline. We introduce execution-grounded completion contracts, which treat completion as a service-level outcome. An independent control plane observes a deadline-bound service-state predicate, admits completion, and directs recovery while the agent performs the task. We evaluate placement and deletion in a live multi-provider data service with heterogeneous models and an injected transfer delay. Across policies, some tasks that missed the deadline were accepted and some that met it were rejected. Under enforcement, accepted completions remained consistent with later observations; all included healthy tasks completed, and unresolved faulted tasks terminated as unverified. The results show that completion of these tasks can be governed by independent observation of service state rather than by the agent's self-assessment.

Whose startup does the AI back? An algorithm audit of reputation and demographic signals in LLM-assisted crowdfunding

arXiv:2611.03993v1 Announce Type: new Abstract: Large language model (LLM) assistants increasingly advise backers on which crowdfunding campaigns to support. LLMs have known race and gender problems, and it is unsettled whether they reproduce, erase, or reverse the discrimination documented in entrepreneurial finance. We ask when, and through which decision process, LLM assistants use founders' gender and ethnicity. In a pre-specified choice-based conjoint experiment, seven LLMs chose among five synthetic campaigns with independently randomized quality signals and founder names, under three backer personas and a persona-free control (40,248 responses). By default, founder names barely matter: under budget-conscious and delivery-focused personas, gender and Black-name effects are statistically equivalent to zero. When the backer wants to support underrepresented creators, the models favor Black-signaled (+8.1 percentage points; positive in all seven models) and female-signaled (+5.1) founders. They do so most strongly among near-tied campaigns and for the founder who alone carries the signal, and they almost never name gender or ethnicity in their reasons. The results fit an agency account of algorithmic discrimination: an aligned assistant takes its demographic preferences from its user rather than from its training data.

Show HN: Sigmajp – Integrated Japanese Reader

I always recommend yomitan and Anki to other intermediate Japanese learners, and if they try it they love it, but they only try it if I set it up for them.I combined an epub reader with a Japanese text parser and dictionary so that tap-to-lookup a word works with no setup. Then I added flash card creation and spaced repetition reviews. And a built-in 'explain' button that asks an LLM to translate and explain the grammar for a sentence. You can also ask follow-up questions after that.I know it's all stuff that exists already, but I hope putting it together will make it more accessible to people, because this is really the method that got me to pass N2 without grinding practice tests.
