Augmentation with Reinforcement Transformation for Low-textured Scientific Sketch Image Retrieval

arXiv:2611.05408v1 Announce Type: new Abstract: Low-textured sketch images are widely used in scientific applications, including wildlife conservation, archaeological illustration, and forensic composites. Learning from and retrieving such images is challenging because they lack detailed surface textures and visual variations commonly exploited by modern deep learning models. This paper proposes Augmentation with Reinforcement Transformation (ART) to fine-tune pretrained models to learn effective representations for accurate sketch image retrieval. Our key observation is that sketches are particularly sensitive to image transformations, such as rotation, flipping, zooming, and stretching. While some transformations preserve their structural integrity, others may introduce distortions that hinder representation learning. Instead of randomly choosing transformations to construct fine-tuning views, ART formulates augmentation selection as a multi-armed bandit (MAB) problem, where transformations are treated as arms and their effectiveness is continuously evaluated through rewards. This enables ART to adaptively construct reward-guided view banks before self-supervised fine-tuning; the subsequent representation loss does not feed back to ART. On Florida manatee sketches provided by Mote Marine Laboratory, ART achieves 71.40% average Top-1 accuracy for transformed-scar retrieval, compared with 68.83% for random augmentation selection, and 55.84% for location-aware sketch retrieval, compared with 18.18% for frozen CLIP.

Energy-Efficient Reinforcement Learning for Large Language Models

arXiv:2611.05748v1 Announce Type: new Abstract: Reinforcement learning for language models alternates between generating responses and training the policy. These stages place different demands on GPUs, creating opportunities to reduce clock frequency with little loss in throughput. Selecting frequencies online is difficult because response lengths change and frequency trials themselves consume time and energy. We present EE-RL (energy-efficient RL), an online controller that selects separate frequencies for generation and training during RL execution. It compares candidate settings with a prediction of the default GPU governor on the same token workload, and keeps the most energy-efficient setting that meets a throughput threshold. The controller then monitors throughput and energy and adjusts frequencies as the workload changes. Fixed-frequency sweeps on H100 and GB200 show GPU energy savings of up to 28.2% per valid training token across synchronous and asynchronous execution, while largely preserving throughput. EE-RL turns this headroom into online savings, reducing GPU energy per valid training token by up to 16.9% at a modest throughput cost.

From Visual Matching to Textual Conditioning: Cross-Domain Few-Shot Segmentation via Reference Inversion

arXiv:2611.04084v1 Announce Type: new Abstract: Cross-Domain Few-Shot Segmentation (CD-FSS) aims to segment objects from unseen domains using only a few annotated references. Recent Segment Anything Model (SAM)-based methods have advanced CD-FSS, yet their reference-target visual matching is highly sensitive to target appearance variations. SAM3 introduces text-conditioned segmentation, enabling natural-language descriptions to guide segmentation across target images, but directly using the category name as the condition still yields unstable performance under severe domain shifts. We propose Reference Inversion for SAM3 (RI-SAM3) that leverages SAM3's large-scale vision-language pre-training to learn suitable textual tokens for each target category. RI-SAM3 comprises three core designs: (i) Bi-level Reference Inversion that learns complementary tokens before and after the frozen text encoder: the former remain anchored in SAM3's text space while the latter represent the category more flexibly; (ii) Layer-adaptive Textual Conditioning combines these tokens differently as object queries evolve across decoder layers; and (iii) Presence-aware Confidence Supervision that jointly supervises query confidence and target presence for reliable predictions. With SAM3 frozen, RI-SAM3 optimizes around 12K parameters only per category and it efficiently segments each target in a single forward pass with reusable textual conditioning without per-sample reference-target visual matching. Extensive experiments over multiple widely adopted benchmarks show that RI-SAM3 achieves superior performance consistently in CD-FSS tasks, together with strong robustness, efficiency, and generalization.

2022 is a year of generalist models! With the bloom of multimodal pretraining, especially the unified model, we have witnessed the opportunity to building a generalist model that is capable of processing tasks of different modalities or multi-modalities! Thus, we propose OFA1, namely One-For-All, a unified multimodal pretrained model that unifies understanding and generation tasks concerning modalities into a single framework, and we pretrain OFA with the instruction-based multitask-pretraining that endows it with multiple capabilities.

Predictive gains, causal losses: why interventional competence cannot be learned from data alone

arXiv:2611.03861v1 Announce Type: new Abstract: Retaining predictive gains can require persistent errors in a model's response to interventions. For deterministic predictors with finite second moments under squared-error loss, any observational advantage over the best predictor using only an outcome's direct causes requires dependence on other inputs, regardless of the learning rule. When admissible interventions vary inputs while preserving the worldly outcome, this dependence yields a positive lower bound on root-mean-square intervention-response error. We identify conditions under which population gradient updates introduce this dependence from a parent-only baseline or damage a previously correct mechanism through shared parameters while improving other predictions. These dependencies can also make model behavior vary with how the same intervention is realized. We characterize interventional alignment through a common output mapping across internal states and physical processes realizing the same intervention target and relevant context. Correction is limited by the causal hypotheses currently admitted within inquiry. The relevant hypothesis class comprises these causal alternatives, rather than the function class the computational system could in principle represent. For predictions restricted to these alternatives, interventional mean error cannot fall below the best approximation they permit, whether evidence is observational or interventional. Reducing error below a positive limit requires admitting better hypotheses, which may entail revising the causal variables, mechanism structure, or intervention interpretation. Interventional criticism constrains replacements without determining them. We conjecture that reliably acquiring and maintaining interventional competence when causal commitments fail requires autonomous participation in proposing alternatives, testing their consequences, and revising them in response to error.

Qwen1.5-32B: Fitting the Capstone of the Qwen1.5 Language Model Series

GITHUB HUGGING FACE MODELSCOPE DEMO DISCORD Introduction The open-source community has long sought a model that strikes an ideal balance between performance, efficiency, and memory footprint. Despite the emergence of cutting-edge models like Qwen1.5-72B and DBRX, the models have faced persistent challenges such as large memory consumption, slow inference speed, and substantial finetuning costs. A growing consensus within the field now points to a model with approximately 30 billion parameters as the optimal “sweet spot” for achieving both strong performance and manageable resource requirements.

Geometric Refinement and Distributional Alignment for Sim2Real Roadside LiDAR Detection

arXiv:2611.03936v1 Announce Type: new Abstract: We describe our approach to the LUMPI track of the UrbanTwin Sim2Real LiDAR Challenge, in which a 3D object detector must be trained exclusively on synthetic data and evaluated on unseen real roadside LiDAR, while the synthetic point clouds are simultaneously scored for distributional realism. Our final entry scores 0.4793 combined, from a detection mAP of 0.1333 and a realism score of 0.9126. Our contribution is not a new architecture. Working from a PointPillars baseline, we obtained most of our gains from three sources. First, a diagnosis that small object failure in roadside LiDAR is a localisation problem rather than a detection problem, which led to a parameter free geometric refinement worth 86 percent relative on pedestrian AP. Second, an audit of our own post processing which revealed that a shipped rule was destroying valid predictions, the repair of which produced our single largest detection gain at 335 percent relative on the Van class. Third, treating the realism metrics analytically rather than as a black box, which showed that one of the four components is a closed form function of nine summary statistics. We also report an experimental methodology that we believe is the more transferable result. Because mean AP decomposes into independent per class terms, a single submission can carry several mutually controlled experiments, and a submission assembled entirely from previously measured components has a score that is known before it is sent. We predicted our final score to four decimal places prior to submission. We report negative results at equal length, and give a full account of data provenance and compliance in Section 8, including a full account of every mechanism contributing to the submitted score.

Rank-Aware Differentially Private Release of Listwise Preferences for LLM Alignment

arXiv:2610.37682v1 Announce Type: new Abstract: Listwise preference feedback offers richer supervision for large language model (LLMs) alignment than pairwise comparisons, but a full ranking also reveals more sensitive user preferences. Existing privacy-preserving alignment methods focus mainly on pairwise feedback, while listwise alignment under local differential privacy (LDP) remains unexplored. Extending LDP to this listwise domain raises a critical challenge: the high sensitivity of the full ranking space demands excessive noise, neutralizing the benefits of listwise supervision. To address this challenge, we analyze the interaction between supervision granularity and privacy noise in downstream training, and introduce a rank-aware exponential mechanism that privatizes listwise prefer

Artifact Distillation: Training-Free Transfer from Frontier to Small Language Models

arXiv:2610.37680v1 Announce Type: new Abstract: Closing the gap between frontier and smaller language models is usually approached by distillation: fine-tuning the small model (student) on a frontier model's (teacher) outputs, which binds transfer to training compute and leaves the transferred knowledge largely opaque. We propose Artifact Distillation: a teacher solves training instances and externalizes its problem-solving procedure into an artifact bank that a student queries at inference time, with no gradient updates. Across four LiveBench tasks, a bank written by Claude Opus 4.5 lets Claude Haiku 4.5 outperform unaided Claude Sonnet 4.5 on spatial reasoning (0.707 vs. 0.647) at 60% of its cost, and reach Sonnet 4.5's level on table joining at 89% of its cost. The same raw bank raises

Locating Sycophancy Across Training Stages in Open Language Models

arXiv:2610.37788v1 Announce Type: new Abstract: Language model assistants sometimes change a correct answer when the user suggests a wrong one. The behavior, called sycophancy, is usually attributed to preference-based post-training, yet early measurements found it in pretrained models. We ask where it comes from by measuring it at every available stage of training: 13 open checkpoints from 5 lineages, from base model through supervised fine-tuning and preference optimization to release. We separate how far an injected claim moves a model's answer from how firmly the answer was held, and vary who makes the claim, how reliable they are said to be, and how strongly they make it. Two sycophancy behaviors with different origins emerge, and both replicate across datasets. Deference to a claim i

Supervised Fine-Tuning for Reasoning Large Language Models: A Survey

arXiv:2610.37681v1 Announce Type: new Abstract: Large reasoning models have recently demonstrated remarkable capabilities in solving complex tasks, where supervised fine-tuning (SFT) on long chain-of-thought data serves as a crucial foundation for eliciting and enhancing their reasoning abilities. Despite rapid progress in both improving and analyzing reasoning-oriented SFT, the field still lacks a systematic survey that consolidates its fast-growing literature. To fill this gap, we present a comprehensive review of recent advancements in reasoning SFT, examining the literature through the dual lenses of methodological design and analytical investigation. First, we review methodological improvements across the SFT pipeline and categorize them into data-centric approaches and algorithm-cent

CONCUR: Concordant Auxiliary Rewards for Multi-Task, Multi-Reward Reinforcement Learning

arXiv:2610.36437v1 Announce Type: new Abstract: When a Large Language Model (LLM) is trained with Reinforcement Learning (RL) on multiple tasks, a task's primary reward can gate auxiliary rewards such as a length reward: on a failing response, an auxiliary cannot exceed the primary. However, group-relative advantage estimators treat a gated auxiliary like any other component, so it can reverse the primary's order, and at the primary's ceiling only auxiliaries order responses. Keeping gated auxiliaries hurts some tasks, while dropping them hurts others. We propose CONCUR, an advantage estimator that replaces the standardized scores of each gated auxiliary with the closest scores that satisfy two conditions: responses with higher primary rewards cannot receive lower scores, and responses at

ProtoEEG: Structured Prototype Alignment for EEG Visual Decoding

arXiv:2610.33065v1 Announce Type: new Abstract: EEG visual decoding remains difficult because scalp recordings are noisy, spatially coarse, and variable across trials and subjects. Most systems align each trial with a dense image embedding, although that embedding mixes semantic content with instance-specific texture, pose, and background. This target can demand details absent from EEG and provides no explicit account of the visual factors supporting a prediction. We propose \textbf{ProtoEEG}, a prototype-mediated framework that reformulates EEG--image alignment as soft composition over a shared learnable visual codebook. A trainable EEG encoder and a frozen visual teacher produce assignment distributions over the same $K=64$ prototypes. Their weighted reconstructions form a structured rep

Whispering Wisely: Smart Subset Selection for ASR Fine-Tuning

arXiv:2610.32997v1 Announce Type: new Abstract: Automatic Speech Recognition (ASR) models such as OpenAIs Whisper have substantially improved speech recognition quality but remain expensive to fine-tune, especially when large amounts of transcribed audio are available. This makes it challenging for many practitioners to adapt these models to new languages or domains. In this work, we introduce an embedding-based subset selection approach for selecting smaller training sets for ASR fine-tuning. Using Whispers pretrained encoder, we map each audio sample into a fixed-dimensional embedding space and apply a greedy k-center algorithm to select diverse and representative subsets of the training data. We evaluate this approach on both Hebrew and Danish, showing that k-center selection often impr

OpenESM: Energy-Steered Models Are Scalable Foundation Learners

arXiv:2610.33005v1 Announce Type: new Abstract: Energy-based models have shown promising properties for domain-specific tasks but remain challenging in modeling general-purpose scenarios. To bridge this gap, we design energy-steered models (ESMs) for foundational language modeling. ESMs integrate energy steering and token generation within a single architecture to leverage the energy-guided search to refine token generation. Specifically, ESMs first optimize a latent state over the energy landscape, then leverages the refined latent state for token generation. By performing such energy-guided pre-training on large-scale corpora, ESMs learn generally effective energy landscape where favorable tokens correspond to lower energy values. To explore the scaling behavior of ESMs, we pre-train ESM

EKT-Router: Expert-Evidence Alignment for Embodied Vision-Language Models

arXiv:2610.33044v1 Announce Type: new Abstract: Embodied vision-language models must answer questions from partial, evolving observations. Their success depends on both the reasoning capability selected and the evidence available to it. Expert routers adapt internal computation, while tool-augmented systems acquire external evidence; choosing these independently can leave a suitable expert without the evidence it needs. We introduce EKT-Router, a bounded framework that jointly selects a capability expert, optional knowledge, and perceptual tools. Outcome-derived signatures represent the overlapping strengths of General, Spatial Reasoning, and Spatiotemporal experts. A joint utility scores complete expert-evidence routes under a call budget. ReMedI: Inference-Time Refinement and Self-Distillation for Controllable Molecular Optimization

arXiv:2610.32103v1 Announce Type: new Abstract: In drug development, lead optimization must improve competing properties, such as increasing permeability and reducing toxicity, while limiting scaffold changes that could compromise the lead's potency. RL-based post-training, such as C-MORAL, addresses this problem by fine-tuning molecular language models to directly optimize molecular leads for objectives of interest, which relies on expensive task-specific datasets and faces challenges in achieving multi-objective optimization (MOO). We argue a pre-trained model may already contain useful molecular edits that zero-shot generation cannot efficiently reach. Motivated by the limited search capabilities of zero-shot generation, we develop an efficient Metropolis-Hastings search strategy to bet
