Computation in Anonymous Directed Dynamic Networks: Exact Worst-Case Termination Time and Network-Wise Intractability

arXiv:2611.01761v1 Announce Type: new Abstract: We determine the exact round complexity of Counting in anonymous directed dynamic networks. Agents have no identifiers, but $\ell\geq1$ of them are designated as leaders. Every agent knows $\ell$ and its own leader status, while the population size $n$ is unknown and has to be determined by the agents. Communication proceeds in synchronous rounds; the directed communication graph may change arbitrarily and unpredictably from one round to the next, but is assumed to remain strongly connected. We solve Counting with a distributed algorithm that makes every agent output $n$ and halt after a number of rounds equal to $\begin{cases} n&\text{if }n=\ell\\ 2n-1&\text{if }n>\ell\text{ and }\ell=1\\ 2n-2&\text{if }n>\ell\text{ and }\ell\geq2. \end{cases}$ The algorithm works even for networks with loops and parallel arcs and even when agents learn their outdegree only after sending. We prove that this bound is worst-case tight over directed multigraphs for every $n$ and $\ell$ with $1\leq\ell\leq n$. Moreover, the local computation is polynomial (provided that each communication multigraph has at most $2^{\operatorname{poly}(n)}$ arcs): in every round, each agent solves at most one linear system with up to $n$ variables. By standard techniques, solving Counting also enables the evaluation of any computable function of the multiset of agents' input values within $2n-1$ communication rounds. The bound above optimizes the worst case over all networks. For an individual network, we show that even deciding whether an agent already has enough local information to determine $n$ is $\mathsf{coNP}$-complete (provided that the numbers of parallel arcs are encoded in binary). Thus, worst-case-optimal Counting admits polynomial local computation, whereas exact network-wise optimization is intractable under standard complexity assumptions.

LOLPlay: Benchmarking Real-Time Visual Agents in League of Legends

arXiv:2611.03685v1 Announce Type: new Abstract: Visual agents need to coordinate reasoning and action while their environment evolves during inference. We introduce LOLPlay, a benchmark in native \emph{League of Legends} with 36 champion-specific tasks spanning resource management, combat, cooperation, and objectives. Agents interact through screenshots and mouse--keyboard actions; automated initialization and 82 executable subgoal checks distinguish partial progress from completion. Across 324 task evaluations of three models at three reasoning-effort settings, GPT-6 Astra achieves the highest task success rate of 25.0\% at low and medium effort, and the highest subgoal success rate of 40.3\% at medium effort. However, high effort improves neither metric over low effort for any model. For Astra, longer requests leave fewer interaction rounds, suggesting a cost to additional reasoning in real-time control. Trajectories reveal incomplete subgoal composition and actions executing after the observed scene changes, motivating agents that combine visual reasoning with timely action.

Stress-Testing the Robustness of LLM-Based Causal Inference

arXiv:2611.03656v1 Announce Type: new Abstract: Why do some of the world's most powerful Artificial Intelligence (AI) systems still struggle to reason about cause and effect? Causal discovery, the ability to discern the underlying drivers of a system, is fundamental to scientific inquiry and has traditionally relied on structured data and statistical methods. Recently, Large Language Models (LLMs) have been explored as an alternative paradigm for causal inference, leveraging their broad knowledge and reasoning capabilities. Yet, despite their linguistic fluency, LLMs often rely on surface-level pattern recognition rather than genuine causal logic. While it is known that LLMs stumble in this domain, we lack a precise map of where, why, and how significantly these failures occur. In this paper, we propose a systematic stress-test framework across six critical dimensions: model scale, causal graph complexity, prompting strategy, metadata quality, data quality, and sensitivity to uncertainty. Our findings reveal a significant "optimism bias" in LLMs; models consistently overestimate causal links, leading to low precision across the board. Furthermore, we demonstrate that traditional evaluation metrics can be deceptive: while reasoning-heavy models lead in performance, the highest scores often occur when uncertainty in inference is overlooked. Once uncertainty is integrated into the evaluation, performance drops, providing a more honest reflection of causal reliability. We also find that, while scaling model size improves outcomes, these gains are fragile; performance degrades sharply as the quality of metadata decreases. This work serves as a practical guide to the blind spots of LLMs, offering a clear-eyed assessment of when these tools can be integrated into a causal discovery pipeline and when they are likely to lead researchers astray.

Towards Automatic Heart Murmur Characterization from Multi-spot Phonocardiograms

arXiv:2611.03654v1 Announce Type: new Abstract: Cardiac auscultation traditionally detects the presence of a heart murmur, but clinicians further characterize it by timing, shape, pitch, quality, and grade. Most automatic phonocardiogram analysis systems stop at binary detection and do not estimate this richer description. In this work, we formulate automatic murmur characterization as five patient-level classification tasks and compare three multi-spot strategies on recordings from the aortic, pulmonary, mitral, and tricuspid auscultation locations. First, classical and deep-learning classifiers are trained independently at each location, and predictions are combined via a maximum-severity late-fusion rule. Second, a synchronous multi-input CNN jointly processes one representative segment per location for a single task. Third, a unified multi-input, multi-output CNN predicts all five attributes from one shared multi-spot representation. Using 735 patients from the CirCor DigiScope dataset with complete four-spot recordings, the best late-fusion configurations reach an unweighted mean sensitivity between 85.56% and 93.81% across the five tasks, with class-specific recalls between 80.00% and 100.00% for every relevant category. The multi-input CNN trails late fusion by 7-16 points depending on the task, while the multi-output model reaches values between 72.59% and 79.40%, estimating all five attributes from one shared representation. We further show that naively balancing training data by adding all minority-class segments degrades patient-level performance under the maximum-severity rule, since it introduces non-representative, noisy segments not filtered by the clustering-based segment selection used for evaluation. These results indicate multi-spot murmur characterization is feasible with both fusion-based and jointly learned architectures, outlining a path toward automatic, structured murmur reports complementing binary screening.

Towards Effective Process Supervision in Mathematical Reasoning

GITHUB HUGGING FACE MODELSCOPE DISCORD Introduction In recent years, Large Language Models (LLMs) have made remarkable advances in mathematical reasoning, yet they can make mistakes, such as miscalculations or logical errors, leading to wrong conclusions. Moreover, even when achieving correct final answers, these powerful models can still regularly make up plausible reasoning steps, where the final answers build upon flawed calculations or derivations, which undermine the reliability and trustworthiness of LLMs’ reasoning processes.

Exposure Is Not Commitment: Double-Stratified Evaluation of Latent Monitors for Tool-Using Agents

arXiv:2610.37679v1 Announce Type: new Abstract: Tool-using language agents are vulnerable to indirect prompt injection, and a growing literature probes model internals to catch unsafe actions before they execute, with sharply conflicting results. We argue much of the conflict is an evaluation artifact, and propose a double-stratification protocol: separate injection exposure from behavioral commitment, in both the evaluation and the training population. On the primary Qwen AgentDojo grid, monitors trained on the naive mixed unsafe-versus-rest contrast mostly learn exposure: they flag exposed trajectories whether or not the agent complies, and barely predict which cases turn unsafe. Retrained on exposed cases only, the same probe families predict the model's own unsafe tool call up to two s

Evaluating and improving AI agents for sequencing protocol understanding

arXiv:2610.37851v1 Announce Type: new Abstract: Existing scientific-agent benchmarks rarely evaluate whether agents can reconstruct the exact molecular structures and generation workflows specified by sequencing protocols, a capability critical for analyzing customized sequencing assays. We introduce LibStructBench, a document-grounded benchmark for reconstructing sequencing-library structures and molecular workflows. Our experiments show that frontier agents often produce approximately correct reconstructions but remain unreliable at exact reconstruction, particularly in molecular-state representation and workflow connectivity. Switching the underlying language model produced larger average performance differences than switching agent harnesses, with a statistically significant difference

Scoring Explanations Without Reading Them: Structural Shortcuts in Automated-Interpretability Evaluation Data

arXiv:2610.37676v1 Announce Type: new Abstract: Automated interpretability scores an explanation of a sparse-autoencoder (SAE) feature by asking a model to predict, token by token, where the feature fires on evaluation examples or to judge whether marked tokens fit it. We find that the evaluation data standard pipelines build can be scored without reading the explanation. On Neuronpedia's stored fuzzing runs for 500 random GPT-2 small features, 91.3% of activating examples are cropped with the peak on the centre token, and a rule that says "yes" when the centre token is marked reaches balanced accuracy 0.979, against 0.838 for the stored LLM scorers (recomputed from the stored per-item verdicts, on marks rebuilt from the pipeline's code); a rule reading only the mark count reaches 0.969. Seq@K: Evaluating Language Models Under Sequential Feedback

arXiv:2610.37859v1 Announce Type: new Abstract: Language-model agents differ fundamentally from prior intelligent systems in their ability to learn from natural language in context. This capability enables agents to iteratively refine their answers in response to feedback, a prevalent mode of operation in modern agentic workflows. However, the community primarily ranks models by metrics such as Pass@1 or Pass@K, which cannot capture how they utilize feedback on prior attempts. We introduce Seq@K, a natural evaluation protocol that measures whether a model can solve a problem within K sequential attempts, provided feedback after each previous failure. Unlike multi-turn agentic benchmarks that examine long-horizon planning, Seq@K isolates and formalizes the core capability of refinement from

Benchmarking Task Takeover Across Agent Handoffs

arXiv:2610.36523v1 Announce Type: new Abstract: As agents collaborate on longer tasks, responsibility may pass between models before the work is complete. The receiving model must build on prior decisions, observations, and actions while addressing the remaining requirements. Evaluating this transition requires connecting the information preserved at handoff to how the receiver continues the work, a relationship that task-success and memory-retention scores alone do not capture. We introduce the Handoff State Continuity Benchmark (HSC-Bench), comprising 1,039 tasks that evaluate two complementary aspects of task takeover: recovering relevant repository evidence and continuing from established conversational, tool, and file-work state. Comparisons across six receiving models show that struc

Do AI Scientists Know What's New?

arXiv:2610.36511v1 Announce Type: new Abstract: A major challenge facing AI scientific discovery pipelines is how to determine when a generated idea is meaningfully novel. Ideally, novelty checks in these pipelines must be able to reject non-novel ideas while not rejecting too many novel ideas, and they should also be able to distinguish which parts of a proposal are non-novel, as opposed to opaquely discarding entire proposals. We design an analytical framework for evaluation of novelty checks with temporal ground truth at both the proposal- and claim-level, using four datasets of 1,060 proposals built from published papers, reviewer disputes, and generated ideas matching ones the field went on to publish. Auditing existing novelty checks with this framework, we find that checks with high

KORA: Deterministic-First Execution Control for AI Workloads

arXiv:2610.35869v1 Announce Type: new Abstract: AI applications often invoke a model before they determine whether inference is necessary. That default is useful for ambiguous generative tasks, but it is poorly matched to work that is structured, deterministic, policy-bound, lookup-oriented, or directly verifiable. KORA introduces deterministic-first execution control: a pre-inference control layer that represents requests as task paths, attempts deterministic or structured routes first, validates route outcomes, records telemetry, and escalates to a model-candidate path only when deterministic handling is insufficient. This paper presents KORA as a deterministic-first execution-control architecture and reports bounded evidence from reproducible benchmark and validation workloads. In a rep
